Homer and Langley's Mystery Spot
Actress Jicky Schnee and photographer Matt Jones are slowly but surely becoming Spot regulars, and we couldn’t be happier! You may have seen Jicky in The Jury and Law & Order, or the Indian movie Flavors. Matt’s photos, of course, are all over the pages of I.D. and Vogue. As usual, they did not leave empty-handed, taking home this framed black construction paper silhouette of a schoolboy circa 1962 ($23.).

Lovely ingénue Julia Mason recently graduated from the American University of Paris and now interns at the Time Magazine offices in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. She popped across the pond this summer to visit Phoenicia (also known as the Fashion Capitol of the Catskills) where she found this stunning Frank Starr strapless Fifties party dress ($60.). She took it back home to the City of Lights to show those Parisians a thing or two about chic.
What a difference a year makes! Last year Akira’s main mode of transport was stroller. Now she’s a big sister (and a cowgirl)! According to doting dad Chris Stein (Blondie), she’s already showing signs of the musical talents that run deep in her gene pool. Chris and Barbara left with an armload of purchases, including a 1910 Mandarin Primer ($40.), this 1960’s National Enquirer ($10.) and a stack of art books.
Speaking of cowgirls, Christine Tharp was thrilled with her latest Spot find, a vintage Gaucho satin embroidered Western shirt ($28.). She revealed to us that her love of western wear goes back to childhood – she got her first pair of cowboy boots at age 8, and slept with them still on.
Tessa models – forgive the understatement - the most killer pair of boots we have ever seen in our lives! A pair of Sixties white leather mod gladiator lace-up sandal boots ($125.) straight from the estate of a former stripper. She completes the look with a deadstock 60’s patchwork cropped shirt ($28.) and Sixties Aquarius Zodiac medallion ($14.)
You want boots? Here’s boots (from that same strip…er… .exotic dancer’s…estate). How about a pair of mod Sixties faux python skintight knee-high vinyl go-go boots? ($65.). Paired with a vintage red vinyl wrap-around mini skirt ($38.) for a drop-dead look.

The girl behind the boots is Sarah, who has the wonderful shop next door, Judy’s Dream/Empty Spaces. Here she is again, this time with a pair of 60s white vinyl knee-high lace-up go-go boots ($36.) and black and white patent leather oh-so-mod purse ($28.), all – you guessed it – from that same fantastic estate. The next time you stroll down the Boardwalk, make sure to stop by Sarah’s shop – she’s got great handmade kid’s clothing and lots of cool stuff.

More vintage boots – in this case a perfectly broken-in pair of brown leather motorcycle boots ($65.), worn a few sizes too big by Viva. A perfect complement to her Fifties grey tafetta circle dress ($44.) and Sixties hippie embroidered ladies’ shearling suede coat ($235.)
Joe Bevilacqua and Lori Kellogg were thrilled to stumble upon a stack of vintage vinyl of their favorite comedy performers. Joe used to work with Bob and Ray, so he was doubly tickled to come across this copy of Bob & Ray on a Platter ($8). and Lori couldn’t resist taking home (could anyone?) An Evening with Nichols and May ($15). Joe has a comedy show on WXM radio, and was trained by Daws Butler (“the voice of Yogi Bear”!)

Photographer Justine Parsons took a break from chopping wood at her cabin and popped over to browse our back room, Homer’s Books d’Arte, where she burrowed around in our extensive photography book collection and emerged victorious with this William Wegman first edition ($20.). Son Oscar (fifteen months and almost potty trained!) emerged a winner as well, with this adorable hand-screened child’s Mystery Spot T-shirt ($10.)
Rene owns the Juicy Lucy juice bars in NYC, Robert is a musician and the manager of Benny’s Burritos, and they both like to head out of the East Village and camp as often as they can. In fact, they were camping up in these mountains one weekend when, lucky for us, they wandered into our little shop and wandered out with several vintage ashtrays ($9. - 24) and a fantastic vintage hand-tooled leather purse with tons of secret compartments ($45.)

Nova is six and is from New Jersey, and Mollie is six and is from Denmark. They’re cousins and best friends! Nova loves ice skating and drawing, and Mollie loves horseback riding and ballet, and they BOTH love to dress up in fun clothes! Nova looks so sophisticated in this vintage 50’s black and white dress ($15.) that her mom got for her, accessorized by a classic black leather handbag ($25.). Mollie took this terrific 50’s brown and white striped cotton dress ($26.) back to Denmark with her, but not before modeling it with a vintage brown hat with peacock feather ($24.) and brown handbag ($25.)
Tessa is snug as a bug in a rug in this awesome Sixties long gray flecked cardigan with oversized faux fur collar ($42.)
Tara Jane O’Neil rocks out in this unusual 70's intarsia patterned knit poncho cape thingie ($38.)
Sylvia would fit right in at a tea party with the Wives of Stepford in this deadstock 70’s ruffled collar floral maxi-dress by “Climax” ($48.), multistrand beaded necklace ($15.), straw handbag ($20.) and paisley parasol ($18.)

Tessa models a pair of early WW1 leather knee-high cavalry boots ($75.), a deadstock groovy 70’s Wayne Rogers printed acetate top ($28.), cowboy boot bolo tie ($12.), and vintage Egyptian-themed hand-tooled leather purse ($35.).
Tessa transforms to big-eyed moppet in this Fifties paisley girl’s frock ($35.) and vintage yellow straw boater with fake cherries ($24.).
.

Diane and Erich Hobbing are both book designers and dog art collectors, and they were ever so pleased to pick up this signed oil painting of a boxer ($60.) and portrait of a dachshund and frog ($60.) to add to their Wall of Hounds in New Jersey.

We were thrilled when this mystery stylist from Martha (Martha Stewart’s TV show) came by and stocked up on all things blue and green for the holidays. Look for this pair of vintage turkey salt & pepper shakers ($14.) on Martha’s Thanksgiving table setting in a future episode!

Fashion queen Veronica Varlow is thrilled with the newest addition to her wardrobe – a fitted Forties gray wool coat with black velvet piping and faceted jet glass buttons ($125.). Veronica has a fantastic site called Danger Dame which offers gorgeous femme fatale retro clothing. Burke Heffner is an amazing pin-up photographer and is man enough to model this sexy little vintage chiffon Christmas-themed cocktail apron ($14.) which will no doubt soon find its way into one of his pin-up photo sessions.

Viva channels Audrey Hepburn in this jaunty Sixties sleeveless black and white mod cocktail dress with pleated chiffon over-skirt and bejeweled cummerbund ($48.), black velvet hat with feather and pearl trim ($35.), and white plastic beaded necklace ($12.).
Aidan is the picture of sophistication in this 60's sleeveless empire waist navy cocktail dress ($48.), wide brimmed felt and feather hat ($35.), black and smoky lucite beaded necklace ($9.), and matching liquid gold purse and glove set ($24.).

If it’s October, it can mean only one thing. Okay, two things. 1) the leaves will change 2) the Gorton-Kirk family will visit! Illustrators (and all-around fab people) Julia Gorton and Daniel Kirk and two of their three awesome kids stop by Le Spot and load up on art books, vintage crochet patterns and vintage T-shirts.

Ayla was happy to take home this mid-century white metal mushroom desk lamp ($55.). She likes ancient things and - guess what else? - posing for photos!

Why are Erin and Jason smiling? Is it because they just bought this groovy Fifties Sputnik metal mod table lamp ($95.) and other assorted treasures? Or - maybe - is it because the night before, Jason proposed to Erin on the banks of the Esopus Creek (yes, a classically executed one-knee affair), and she accepted? (Note ring!). In any case, we were thrilled to see romance blossom once again in the aisles of The Mystery Spot, and gave them an early wedding gift of the Vogue Sewing Book.

Sylvia is pretty in pink as she twirls in this Fifties pale pink corduroy circle dress ($48.), pink and white glass bead bracelet ($10.) and vintage dial telephone ($45.).
Our old pal, photographer Kelly Budgen, took an instant liking to the Mystery Spot's Jackalope (NFS), known the be the only one ever found in the wild East of the Rockies.

Mystery Spot regulars Camilla Nickerson, Neville Wakefield, Atticus and Jackson have their arms full with the day's haul. Vintage men's striped pajamas ($24.), brown leather motorcycle boots ($65.), and a cozy gray cashmere sweater ($28.)
We've been dressing Nora Demenus in vintage duds ever since she was in High School. Now she's at NYU Film School and her fashion sensibility has surpassed our greatest expectations. Case in point: vintage 1950's blue herringbone tweed matching hat and muff set. ($45.). Need we say more?

Dave Pillard owns the wonderful home furnishings shop Tenderland Home next door. The other day we accidentally left this terrific black vintage shearling men's jacket ($65.) outside when we were closing up, and he was kind enough to rescue it for us. It must have made quite an impression on him, because the next day instead of returning it, he bought it!

We often run into Lynda and Elliot Landy at yard sales around town. He has a great eye, as is apparent from the classic photos he's taken of Bob Dylan, The Band, and other Woodstock legends. They were very happy to take home this John Coltrane album ($20.) p.s. Lynda, Landy, Dylan - what do these names have in common?

Wait! There's MORE! ----->>>
