James Brown (1984, NYC) - I wish I could say that I spent hours with the Godfather of Soul shooting rolls and rolls of film, but in fact I had about five minutes with him. He was staying at the Hilton Hotel during the New Music Seminar and I managed to talk my way into his suite for some photos. Whenever I photograph someone who has a very strong - some may almost say almost cliched - public image, I try to show another, more private and intimate side of them. Apensive JB at the grand piano in the penthouse suite said it all.
